Matching Your Shirt and Tie

Matching Your Shirt and Tie

Before you throw together a shirt and tie, let’s make sure they complement each other. Matching solid colors is easy and always a clean look, but combining color patterns is a way to add character to your outfit. There is no real right or wrong, but there are some points to keep in mind.

You’ll want to start with your shirt. Once you’ve picked out your shirt, choose a tie with a similar color anywhere in its pattern. Remember, your tie should always be darker than your shirt! Also keep in mind your collar and tie should be in proportion with each other. Try to pair larger patterns with smaller ones. This way, your patterns will visually complement each other.

Try a gingham checked shirt with a plaid stub or boarding tie as these work well together. A striped shirt and heraldic club tie also looks sharp.
